jurs birthday alleycat
Saturday march 4th was a beautiful day. It started snowing at about noon, which it hadn’t done for about the whole winter, and of and on it kept snowing hard with strong winds all day. So actually I didn’t really expect anyone to show up. The race was supposed to start at 20.00 hours so at 19.30 no one was there yet. 19.40 the Velocity Arnhem crew showed up, Dirk Diggler though was sick so he helped out at a checkpoint. After them groups kept showing up and there were 13 riders, best show up till now. 20.30 we finally started, only half an hour late.
At the start the racers only had one address so there was a mass sprint, extra prize for the one who arrived there first, won by AJ. Because of the big group sprinting and the frozen snow on the streets there were a couple of crashes, nothing serious though. At that checkpoint the racers got three addresses which they could do in any order they wanted, at every of those three addresses they had to get a signature and they got another address which they then also had to go to and get a signature so in total there were seven checkpoints and then they had to go to the finish. The finish was in the Vondel park where the second edition of the bike wars bike demolition derby was held. All the checkpoints had more or less something to do with the courier work in Amsterdam. The first 3 checkpoints were the three bicycle courier companies base stations, which were all manned and where they had to make a drop and pick and those three picks. From there they had to drop one at a small independent courier’s house, one at the (translated) Connection street and one at a little hard to find dark dead-ending path. The most logical route was to end at that path close to the finish, which was manned by Xander who was in radio contact with me at the finish. The first one who came there after about twenty minutes was Jur, so I thought Jur won big time and I was waiting for him at the finish, but then ten minutes later Xander told me Kees and Vis showed up there together and were sprinting my way. It was exciting Vis being a former junior track racing champ and Kees now doing some track racing. At the finish Kees came skidding about ten meters around the group of people that were standing there before Vis came skidding around that group of people…………..Nice finish, close race.

Special thanx to all the checkpoint marshals and all the courier companies for their time and effort and to our sponsors Nirifak, Brands, Kaptein and Lohmann and het Mannetje for supporting us with prizes which there were for everybody.
